South Burnett Express is Back!

Entries are now open for the 2026 South Burnett Express Rail Trail Relay, returning to Kingaroy on Sunday 26 July 2026 for its sixth year.

The race follows the historical rail trail from Kingaroy to Wondai and back — a scenic course of around 60 km. Teams of five to eight share the load, running legs that range from 400 m to just under 8 km, with most runners covering around 5 km before tagging their teammate.

“Six years in, we have established a great format. What keeps people coming back is the combination of a great location and a love for running.”

John Purcell, Race Director

Queensland Athletics has sanctioned the 2026 event as the State Road Relay Championships, adding a competitive edge for those chasing the title. Purcell is quick to point out that the atmosphere stays inclusive regardless.

“We get everything from serious club runners to groups of mates who’ve signed up as a fitness goal. Everyone is welcome.”

John Purcell, Race Director

The social side of the event is a big part of the appeal. Teams are encouraged to make a weekend of it — there’s a dinner before the race, and a BBQ and presentations at Kingaroy’s O’Neill Square once the last runner crosses the line. Purcell says it’s become something people look forward to as much as the race itself.

“By the time you get to the BBQ everyone’s swapping stories and having a laugh. It’s a relaxed way to spend a Sunday.”

John Purcell, Race Director

The event draws local runners as well as those from across Southeast Queensland, and organisers are encouraging teams to extend their stay.

“Kingaroy and the surrounding region have a lot going for them — good food, good wine country, and the stops along the rail trail itself are worth exploring. We’d love people to stay a night or two and support the local community.”

John Purcell, Race Director

Entries are limited. The South Burnett Express sits alongside other events in the region including the Wondai Running Festival and the Dead Cow Gully Ultra Marathon, making it a natural anchor for a running-focused trip to the area.

Teams can register now at www.southburnettexpress.run. Early entry is recommended.
