Trail running is experiencing somewhat of a boom and one of the latest events to grace the calendar is the Southern Highlands Challenge.
For some, taking the plunge and leaving the tar-sealed roads for the rigors of the trails is a little daunting. Many of the off-road races on offer tend to be a tad extreme in nature for first timers. It can be daunting to run these long distances, let alone on uneven surfaces and hilly terrain. But the beauty of this event is that it has newcomers in mind. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great for experienced trail hardened legs too. However, what I love about it is that there’s something for everyone and that even the longest option is attainable for anyone, assuming they do a little bit of training beforehand.
The location is easily accessible from Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra. It’s around 90 minutes drive from all three. Though it’s the varying terrain and scenery that makes the Southern Highlands Challenge even more attractive. Think open fire trails, running through pines, stretches of single track and stunning views. It makes for an enjoyable and healthy way to spend a morning. There’s also loads to check out in the surrounding area, which makes it ideal for a family weekend away.
So if you’re looking for an event to test yourself on the trails, or something to get you primed for the Sydney Running Festival, then head to Wingello on Auf=gust 31st and have a crack!
