Spectator’s Guide to Sydney Marathon
The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS, is set to captivate thousands of eager spectators as they line the streets of Sydney on Sunday, 15 September 2024, for one of Australia’s most renowned athletic events.
A Candidate Race for the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM), the TCS Sydney Marathon has unveiled major new upgrades to its spectator live sites and on-course entertainment at hubs across the city. Sydneysiders are being urged to leave the car at home and take public transport, with road closures scheduled in support of the history-making event.
“The TCS Sydney Marathon is a shared experience for runners and spectators alike,” said Wayne Larden, Race Director, TCS Sydney Marathon. “A marathon creates a unique connection between runners and spectators, and Sydney is renowned globally for its electric atmosphere. Every year it’s amazing to see such a diverse group of people come together to push their limits. As Australia’s largest ever marathon we can’t wait to have marathon runners feed off the energy of the crowd, whilst our spectators are equally moved by the bravery and resolve of ordinary individuals taking on this significant challenge.”
Five spectator live sites in The Rocks, Surry Hills, Randwick, Centennial Park and UNSW have been introduced this year, offering those watching plenty of entertainment, 100 free coffees, food trucks, DJs, drag queen performances, as well as NIB Cow Bells and TCS Sydney Marathon Clappers to cheer on loved ones pounding the pavement. These sites will feature large screens broadcasting the marathon live, and each live site will have a $250 ASICS voucher to give away to the best supporters.
Marathon runners will be entertained throughout the 42.195km course with 32 entertainment zones featuring DJs, community bands, reggae groups and bongo funk bands. Participants will pass the entertainment zones a total of 49 times during their run.
Spectators will have the chance to cheer on their family and friends or just soak up the atmosphere at Sydney’s iconic Rocks Markets, just steps away from the finish line and the stunning Harbour. Over at Taylor Square, one of Sydney’s most vibrant LGBTQIA+ neighborhoods, spectators are invited to join the high-energy festivities alongside Sydney’s fabulous Drag Queens and Kings, adding flair and fun to the marathon experience.
The UNSW Live Site will bring electrifying energy to the course with students cheering on their mates at the ‘UNSW Tunnel of Noise.’ Expect an all-out celebration with live broadcasts, pumping DJs, energetic MCs, free coffee, and exciting giveaways. In Randwick, Meeks St Plaza will buzz with community spirit as locals cheer on the runners. For those seeking a picturesque spot, The Homestead in Centennial Park offers an idyllic setting with live coverage, DJs, MCs, and a vibrant atmosphere as runners pass through from 7am to 12pm—perfect for a morning immersed in the marathon magic.
2DAYFM will be energising the ‘Running With Pride’ Live Site with DJ Justin Hill, music, giveaways, and a $250 ASICS voucher up for grabs. Meanwhile, Hello Sport and Budgy Smuggler will host the brand new ‘Watering Hole’ at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, a lively spectator zone on the home stretch. Complete with a bar, jacuzzi, big screen, DJ, MCs, and food and drinks, it promises to be a high-energy spot to cheer runners on as they near the finish line. Spectators are invited to the ‘Watering Hole’ to give runners the final push home, as they race towards the finish line.
Additional ‘Hot Corners’ will be activated by TRANSURBAN at the corner of Macquarie St & Bent St, and by ASICS at the corner of Macquarie St & Prince Albert Rd. Featuring live DJs and MCs, these vibrant hotspots offer prime viewing locations as runners pass by twice during the race, making them ideal for spectators to cheer on their loved ones.
Now in its second year, the TCS Sydney Marathon Local Business Partner Program offers local businesses the chance to connect with participants and supporters. Restaurants and pubs in the CBD will offer special deals throughout marathon week, while cafes and pubs along the course will cater to race day crowds. Spectators can spot branded signage and enjoy exclusive deals via the Sydney Marathon App.
Additional train and bus services will run throughout the day, allowing more stress-free time to enjoy the action on course. Sydney Marathon participants can travel free on public transport throughout the day.
The TCS Sydney Marathon and its candidacy for the Abbott World Marathon Majors series is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
