Run Bibbulmun is Back

The Run Bibbulmun Track Stage Race is back and better than ever for solo runners next Friday 15th to Sunday 17th November, 2024.

The three-day ultra stage running race will traverse large sections of the famed Bibbulmun Track in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia.

200 competitors and their supporters will begin arriving from across Australia into Denmark next week as they prepare for the two race distances as part of the event – a Long Course covering 33 – 39km per day; and a Short Course spanning 17 – 24km per day.

The course has been designed to not only push competitors’ limits, but to showcase the region’s natural beauty – from the tall Tingle and Karri trees at the Valley of the Giants near Walpole to the windswept granite cliffs of the Torndirrup Peninsula.

Each day offers a mix of terrain along wild back beaches, flowing picture-postcard cliff tops and trails; rock-hopping and inland single-track.

The new and improved format of the previously named Great Southern Stange Run held in 2022 and 2023, has been designed with simpler logistics and more inclusive for participants of all levels. Competitors will stay in one location throughout the entirety of the race, allowing for relaxation each afternoon after completing the day’s run.

Organisers Rapid Ascent continue to have their self-imposed field limit of 200 participants in order to preserve the natural environment and ensure an exceptional experience for all.

General Manager of Rapid Ascent Sam Maffett is looking forward to welcoming runners to such a unique and special event;

“The Great Southern region is one of Australia’s best kept secrets when it comes to trail running locations,” said Maffett. “It truly is a remarkable course in a remarkable setting, and we can’t wait to share it to a broader range of runners this year.”

“To share our passion for adventure and the sense of belonging that ultra trail running brings is truly special,” continued Maffett.

Winner of the 2023 race and notable ultra distance competitor Kate Cush said of the adventurous course;

“That was one of the toughest stage races I’ve ever done; with so many beautiful places along the course too,” said Cush.

2024 competitors are equally as enthused;

“This is my first ever stage running event so I am very excited!” – Anne-Marie.

“I’m travelling from Idaho (USA) to run the 3 stages with my cousin!” – Christi.

Dr Inia Raumati from New Zealand is hoping to be the first person to run a multi stage self-supported ultra on each continent in 1 year;

“This Aussie race will be my penultimate one before heading to Antarctica. Looking forward to it!”

The final day of running on Sunday will see competitors and their supporters enjoy finish line festivities at McLean Park, Denmark.

The Great Southern is the largest and most diverse region within Australia’s South West and is supported by the City of Albany who have helped Rapid Ascent evolve such a special event. Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said this event showcases the best of the region’s natural landscape.

“Albany is a place where adventure meets natural wonder, and we are delighted to welcome all participants and supporters to experience the Great Southern’s unparalleled beauty,”

“Whether you’re tackling the trails or cheering from the sidelines, this event brings us together in a celebration of resilience, community, and connection to nature,” said Stocks.

The event is supporting the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and their ongoing maintenance and management of the trail.

A summary media release and high-res images will be shared at the conclusion of the event.
