REVIEW: Step One

I have a confession to make. For most of my life when it came to underwear I’ve always been a “keep it simple” kinda guy. A bulk pack of Bonds a couple times a year and I was sorted. But as time has progressed I’ve become a bit more of an undie expert. What created this passion for finding the perfect pair of briefs? Well, let’s just say that chaffing can be a powerful motivator for change. As my running volume went up, so to did the need for the right undergarments. Needless to say, the Bonds are no more and in their place I have a collection of lollybags with one for ever occasion.

This brings me to the Step One range. Prior to doing this review I hadn’t tried them, but I had seen the catchy advertising. A wear-test was on my to do list and with one of each of their range ready to go, I set about a month-long process of putting them through their paces. But before I talk of their performance, here’s a quick note on their aesthetic.

All the products come in various colours to suit everyone’s taste. They have the simple hues in their classic range, and then more fun options and patters in the Limited Edition category. There’s a thick waist band and varying leg lengths dependent on the model. One thing you’ll notice is the UltraGlyde panels on the inner legs. These are the soft, anti-chafe panels that have revolutionised my running experience.

Functionally, they perform extremely well. All the products in the range are made from organically grown bamboo that wicks away sweat and keeps you cool. They’re also ergonomically designed to hold everything in its place, with a broad waist band and tapered legs that means you don’t need to constantly adjust things. For me, the various boxer options were absolute winner for everyday wear, but as a runner, the standout was the Trunk.

They have been designed for guys with thinner legs, like your average distance runner. They’re super soft and have just enough flexibility to let you move freely. The UltraGlyde panels work a treat and there are no annoying seams or friction points that end up red raw after a long summer run. With a 4.5 inch inseam, the leg length is quite short, perfect for wearing beneath any running pants or tights. The added bonus is they look great, so when you’re madly getting changed next to your car at the trailhead, if anyone sees you half naked, you’ll at least look like you have some taste when it comes to undies.
