Review: Skratch Labs Energy Chews

Everyone has their preferences when it comes to how they fuel during training and races. For shorter events the go-to is typically gels, but as you move into ultra territory there becomes a need for variety, not just in terms of flavours but also textures. Also, each of us reacts differently to liquid, gel and solid fuel sources. Anecdotal evidence suggests solid options are typically more palatable and have cause fewer stomach issues.

One of the brands that’s doing great things in the ‘chew’ category is Skratch Labs. Their Energy Chews are made with natural ingredients and balanced electrolytes, scientifically designed to provide both immediate and also sustained energy. With an emphasis on real fruit, non-GMO, and gluten-free sources, the chews are pleasant for not only your taste buds but most importantly, your stomach too. Each packet of chews contains 140 calories and 36 grams of carbohydrates, so a packet every 40mins or so is a good amount.

There are four flavours: raspberry, sour cherry, blueberry, orange and Lemond + green tea. The range has something to suit everyone, but we recommend having a selection of options as it helps to reduce the likelihood of flavour fatigue. They’re super easy to chew and are kind of like little lollies, and are small enough that if you’re in a hurry to get them in you can swallow a bunch of them whole with a mouth full of water.
