The 31st edition of the Cadbury Marathon, will be held on Sunday January 12th. Quickly growing in popularity, it’s the largest marathon on the Apple Isle and the first race of that distance in Australia in 2014.
This year sees the addition of a 10km event to compliment the marathon, half marathon, 5km and 1km events. The highlight is the longer race, which sees a quality field toeing the line. For many of the competitors, running the marathon is a new years resolution or an annual challenge where they aspire to personal bests or simply completing the course. For those at the pointy end PBs are always a goal but it’s a podium finish they’re after.
Favourites for the marathon include the resurgent Alastair Stevenson from QLD. This will be his debut over the distance and after setting some solid times over the half marathon in the last two years, all eyes will be on this former national 1,500m champion. Local runner Jarrod Shaw and defending champion Matt Fenech from Canberra will be others to watch as both are capable of taking the win. In the women’s race it looks as though it will be a race in two between Kirsten Molloy and Julie Hunziker. The men’s half marathon sees local legend Dave Thomas a clear favourite. Thomas placed 3rd in the 2013 Australian Cross Country Championships and is always at the front end of any race in Tasmania. His major rival will come in the form of Dave Criniti, who has previously won the marathon and has a half PB of 67:12. Others to watch for minor placings are James Attard, Jordan Harries and Patrick Nispel. In the female event the stand out is Clare Geraghty. Her 1:14:56 personal best is significantly better than her rivals, however Karinna Fyfe and Kate Chettle will ensure a battle ensues as soon as the starters gun fires.
